(More customer reviews)Surge protector strips are easy enough to use, but what about all of the other devices that go unprotected because they're hard-wired? (ex: heat pumps, air conditioners, pool pump motors, ceiling fans, digital appliances, LED light bulbs, motion sensors, etc.) Whether or not you've already had the misfortune of ruined appliances or electronics due to a power surge (like me), don't wait any longer to install a whole-house surge protector. It's inexpensive, takes only 15 minutes for a standard installation, and most everything in your house will be protected from most surges. The CHSPMICRO (aka Eaton Surge Trap) is not a total replacement for high-joule surge protector strips for your expensive electronics (you must use those or the add-on phone/cable modules in conjunction to protect your phone and cable lines anyway, or you void the protection warranty), but it should cover most common surges. Also, remember that surge strips DO wear out over time, so a backup device gives peace of mind.
Installation is very simple. You'll need a dedicated 15-amp double-pole breaker to install:
- turn off main breaker
- mount device into a knockout in your breaker panel (threaded nipple attached)
- connect green ground wire and white neutral wire to the neutral/ground bus(es)
- connect the black and red wires to separate terminals on a 15-amp double-pole breaker
- turn on the main
- turn on the double-pole breaker
Two green LEDs indicate that both 120v phases are protected. If those LEDs ever go out or the breaker is thrown, then you know it's time to be replaced. Hopefully, you'll never know that it's working. I picked up this protector and the breaker at a home center for about $60.
