(More customer reviews)This "Decora" style X10-compatible dimmer/switch features the extended dimming function. Tapping the switch will alternate between OFF and the last-set dim level. To set the dim level, hold the switch in until the desired level is reached.
After an easy install, the mechanical operation of the switch was unacceptable. All it took to operate the switch was the LIGHTEST brush against it, not even an intentional press... I mean I probably could have actuated it by breathing on it. To remedy, I removed the plastic switch paddle and Dremeled the back of it for 20 minutes until I ground enough plastic away to ensure it took an intentional press to actuate.
I have another one of these units, and I'll post my experience with that one [if I can], after installation.
After modification, the dimmer switch performed well.
The device comes with white and ivory pieces, so you can choose your color.

CFLs are not compatible with most automatic-on motion sensors as they still require a bit of current flow. You need a motion sensor that includes a neutral wire, which is unfortunate for me as the wiring in my house is old and doesn't have neutral wires.

I use this switch in the mode where the light turns on when motion is detected (it also has a vacancy mode). This switch works with both CFL and LED lights. Also, this switch actually turns off the power completely when the light goes off, unlike another one I tried. A couple things to note are that this switch requires a neutral in addition to power and ground. Also (at least in the mode I use it) you can manually turn on or off the light with the switch, but after it stops detecting motion for a while, it will revert back to automatic operation. It feels well constructed. Great switch!

Lutron DVWCL-153PH-WH Diva Dimmable CFL/LED Dimmer with Wallplate, White Review

(More customer reviews)Frustrated with Compact Flourescent Lights that were labeled "dimmable" but wouldn't dim, I replaced my old dimmer switches with these. (When removing the old ones I noticed those were stamped on the metal plate that they were for incandescents only -- hmm, maybe that's why they didn't work with CFLs?)
Voila! the dimmable CFLs now dim! They don't buzz and they don't blink.
Pros: Installation instructions are clear -- including how to calibrate for the particular brand of CFLs you are using. The wiring is standard, the calibration was new to me, but simple and straightforward. I figure by using the CFLs the whole set up will pay for itself in 3 or 4 years. The bulbs I'm using are supposed to last for seven years, and by then maybe we'll be using LEDs - which these switches are designed to handle also.
Cons: Pricey compared to switches for incandescent dimming. I don't know if they work with all CFLs labeled dimmable -- Luton provides a list of a few approved LEDs and CFLs in the package and more on their website. I used one of those.

(More customer reviews)This switch works fine - it's quiet and it's perfect for our bathroom fan that we often would forget to turn off. The only downside is that if you use a ceramic wall plate (or probably any style of wall plate that's thicker than normal), the rotating switch might not stick out far enough. To deal with this you'll need to replace your wallplate with a GFCI-style plate (the type with one large rectangular opening), and you'll need to trim the plastic faceplate included with the switch so that it'll fit. I did this and I'm happy with the results.

(More customer reviews)I bought this product at the local Home Depot store to switch the light and the fan on my bedroom fan. The installation requires to install a canopy module that sits between the switch and the fan itself. The canopy module is zip-tied to the internal fan housing and is out of sight. Relatively speaking, the canopy module installation was pretty straight forward.
When I installed the switch, I though I paid attention to how the previous switch was wired. Unfortunately I had one of the wires reversed. My switch had three black leads attached to it. One of them was power, the other went to the fan and the third continued the circuit to the rest of the room. I accidentally reversed the wiring which left me confused as the fan would be on, with all of the circuits in the room, however the switch did not affect anything on the fan.
I wasn't sure if I did something wrong at the switch end or the canopy module end. I called up Lutron's tech support which is listed in the instructions and on their website. 24/7 tech support was really 24/7 as I was calling at 7pm on a Sunday evening! Amazingly I was talking to someone from the US; I figured that they would definitely offshore a weekend call. This likely speaks to their customer service guarantee. The tech on the phone pointed out that I may have the wires at the switch reversed and suggested that I disconnect it, leave two of the black leads touching, turn on the breaker and see what happens. From there I saw that I wired the room power to the fan, but not to the rest of the room. I made the appropriate fixes to the switch and happily completed the install. Major kudos to the Lutron customer service and tech support.
Lastly, this is a really cool switch, it has a number of different modes for turning the lights and fan on and off, including delayed dimming, fast-on, fast-off and variable speed settings with memory. It is a great product and wouldn't mind installing it in any of my other rooms with fans. It also means that you don't have to use the pull cords on the fans anymore.

In my case, the floor lamp in which I was installing this socket had a decorative housing in which the socket was set, and there was a one or two inch gap between the socket itself and this housing. The lamp manufacturer dealt with this by having a long knob on the existing socket which I was replacing. As a result, I had to construct an extension to the knob on this dimmer socket in order to fit through the lamp housing. If your lamp has a housing around the socket, be aware of the possibility that you will have to similarly fiddle with the knob to this dimmer, or construct an extension as I did.

(More customer reviews)I like this switch! I bought it because I had previously purchased a similar switch, but it didn't have the LED illumination. I missed that when I replaced the old circle button dimmer.
This is a high quality product. The wires are braided and encased in plastic. There are no quick connect holes. It comes with two interchangeable faceplates. The instructions were pretty good. I had to wire up the white wire to my homes electrical system though to get this to work properly. I was wiring it in a box with an electronic timer that required this, and this is also in series with another plug in an adjacent room. So that may explain why I had to do this even though the instructions say I shouldn't.
I think it will last a long time. If the cover breaks, I can always put the almond color faceplate on.
The switch is pretty big, but I was able to stuff it next to the timer (also large) and about 20 inches of copper wire all into a standard electrical box fairly easily.
The dimming of the lighting doesn't go as low as my old dimmer, but it goes low enough so that if it went any lower, the light wouldn't really be useful. And it goes low enough that it won't hurt your eyes even if you just woke up.
The unit does not appear to get hot or make annoying noises such as a hum.

(More customer reviews)I bought this to replace a Leviton PR180. The PR180 seemed to work on my 3 fluorescent lights (2 electronic ballasts, 1 magnetic), but then the bulbs started flickering and eventually went out.
The OSSNL went in with new bulbs and the difference was immediately noticeable. It was as if the lights were connected to a standard switch! Not a hint of buzzing. Definitely worth the extra money for this switch.
I was very impressed by the configuration options in this switch, and spent about an hour testing everything and getting it right. It's great!
02/17/2010 Followup review:
Lowering my rating on this switch because now it is behaving strangely. The switch is installed in my garage and typically the lights are off when I open the garage door, then they turn on as soon as I step on the garage stairs. Recently I had noticed that the lights were on when I arrived home from work, and were on when I would first open the garage door. The switch was not turning off the lights after the 30 second timeout! I tried the manual on/off, and that would shut the lights off but they would not turn back on when I moved in front of the sensor. Even though nothing had changed with the switch configuration, it began functioning strictly as a manual on/manual off switch. As a final fix attempt I ended up flipping the circuit breaker that the switch was attached to, and now it appears to be working again. We'll see how long that lasts. Very strange and frustrating.
03/10/2010 Followup review:
It seems this switch has now completely stopped functioning as a motion-sensing switch. Despite repeating my previous efforts, I was unable to get the lights to turn off in either auto or manual mode. Perhaps I got a lemon. I've uninstalled the switch and will be sending it to Leviton for a replacement under warranty. Hopefully the next switch does not have these problems.
04/25/2010 Followup review:
Leviton sent me a new swtich approximately 2 weeks ago (so expect a 1-month turnaround if you send in a defective switch). So far it is working properly. I will update this review again later after the new switch has been installed for a longer period of time.

Well it's been two months since I installed the new switch, and it's still working properly. Seems I just got a lemon the first time.

The NightLight operates separately from the lights that are controlled by the sensor, and it will turn on when its photocell detects ambient light that is less than one foot-candle. Angelo Brothers 70801 Halogen Dimmer for Torchiere Lamps Review

(More customer reviews)The switch comes ready to wire together with existing lamp wires. Very easy. ONE NOTE HOWEVER: I purchased two switches to repair both of my lamps. One was 500W and the other 300W. The new switch went inside the 500W lamp pole with plenty of room. It would not insert into the 300W. My 300W pole inside diameter was too small and the switch height from base to toggle(?) top was too tall.
I measured both outside diameters of each of the lamps. The 500W was 1.5 inch outer diameter whereas the 300W was 1.25 inch outside diameter. Approximating, you will need a outside pole diameter of 1.35 inch or larger for this replacment switch to install.

(More customer reviews)I've actually been pretty lucky with the Interlink SS7C timer switch I was using. I had two of the Interlink SS7C timers located in the house and they both lasted quite over three years which apparently is a lot longer than most folks have had success. However, I had one completely die a few months ago and then had the second one display the typical problems with the "No Op" issue. So, time to replace it!
I researched other Interlink switches and also came across this Aube. The other flush mount Interlink switch that could be an option cannot handle CFL bulbs.
Five huge benefits to the Aube TI071/U vs the Interlink SS7C:
1) It is flush with the wall (the Interlink SS7C sticks out a good inch from the wall)
2) It is quiet turning on and off (the Interlink SS7C is very noisy due to the manual motor it has inside)
3) It is back-lit (the Interlink SS7C is not backlit and has a super small display)
4) It does not require batteries (the Interlink SS7C requires a double-A battery and as you will see in various reviews, it has connection problems and causes the switch to fail often)
5) You can have it auto program based on your latitude and longitude.
I am sure there is a 6th benefit in that it is probably a lot more reliable than the Interlink, but I can't say that currently since I've only had it for a few days.
A 7th benefit (compared to the other Interlink switches) is that this switch can handle any type of light bulb.
Well worth getting this switch and avoiding the Interlink switches.

I still love this switch. It has been very reliable -- no problems so far. I also just love the way it looks and operates. I hate ugly looking devices and this one does not disappoint.
I have it set up in "travel" mode and unlike other switches where it will just randomly turn the lights on and off _once_ during a set time period, this switch will randomly turn the lights on and off multiple times during a set time period. This way it is even harder to tell if someone is home. Just realize that if you use this mode and you are in the room during this time period, the light may turn off while you are in the room. ;-)

(More customer reviews)Note - due to the shape of the housing of these switches, you can't put two of them side by side in a ddouble gang box. I found this out the hard way. You have to use a three-gang box and leave a space in between (if you can find such a switch plate, I couldn't), or use two single-gang boxes side by side.

(More customer reviews)I've now owned this unit for a full year at this point (purchased it at amazon) and can say that it is a first-rate product.
I'm not sure why others say it "get's hot"...but in terms of *my* dimmers, they are surprisingly cool.
Only slight issue, as with *all* new dimmers (no matter what the brand), is that you must ensure that your electrical box has proper depth/room to accommodate such units as this which are distinctly larger than a traditional light switch. Nothing like a big problem but just something to think about.
In short, I would highly recommend this product.
