(More customer reviews)I have this set up on my well pump to keep the pump cycles down (it pumps into a gravity feed storage tank). Instructions are a little sparse, but I got it right on my first attempt, so must be reasonably clear.
Manual/off/timer switch is good. Timer wheel easy to set and I like that you can't lose the pins.
I had previously (mistakingly) bought a 59396 30-Amp Timer without noting the "SPST" notation. To be honest I'm not sure who needs a 30 AMP single pole switch. But this one (DPST) works fine.

(More customer reviews)These switches are a great way to put a night light in areas where an outlet isn't available, like a stairwell, and also for a more streamlined look than a plug-in night light. They are bright and illuminate areas very well. Probably too bright for a bedroom; although the outlet model would probably be ok there, since the installation would be below eye level. One note: these require hot, neutral and ground wire connections to be available.

you wall color then you will be feeling for them in the dark. I think they need to have some sort of brighter find light on them.
Or else you will watch the color of your paint around the switch slow get covered with dirty hands.

I have had a few of these for many years. None have ever failed. Setup is straightforward and programming is reasonable.
Having the lights automatically adjust for sunrise/sunset is great. If we leave the house at 4pm and come back at 9pm, the front lights are on.
There is a little bug in the programming (TI034). It screws up if it is programmed to turn on before midnight and turn off after midnight. I forget now how it screws up, because I changed mine to turn off just before midnight. I think it just stayed on.
I would like more flexible programming, but that usually comes with complexity. There isn't much space there for a display.
1. Be able to set an offset (sunset +/- nn minutes).
2. A random feature where it would vary the actual on/off times by +/- nn minutes. This is a minor point, because it already vary some because of changing sunset/sunrise times.
3. Automatic adjustment for daylight savings. That may be a problem, because they could change the cutover date, so maybe it's better as it is.
This also allows me to synch the clock twice a year. The timer does not keep perfect time, which is surprising. I would think it could use the 60 Hz from the grid to stay perfectly in time. Maybe an upgraded model could include a received for the time signal from Colorado? :-)
This is one of my favorite gadgets. It used to be very hard to find. I am glad that Amazon is now carrying it. I often give them away as gifts.
07/30/10 Update: Aube makes quite a few models. It took me awhile to figure out the differences and I bought one wrong model. Some of them are designed for more heavy-duty work and controlling motors (033 & 035). I see that they now have a few new models with more programming options and higher wattage ratings. Most of mine are the 034. These are fine for porch lights. Our front porch light is also wired in with the front outside plug so it can control external Christmas lights. The 500 watt max for the 034 is limiting. I may get the new 071 or 072 to replace that one.

(More customer reviews)I've actually been pretty lucky with the Interlink SS7C timer switch I was using. I had two of the Interlink SS7C timers located in the house and they both lasted quite over three years which apparently is a lot longer than most folks have had success. However, I had one completely die a few months ago and then had the second one display the typical problems with the "No Op" issue. So, time to replace it!
I researched other Interlink switches and also came across this Aube. The other flush mount Interlink switch that could be an option cannot handle CFL bulbs.
Five huge benefits to the Aube TI071/U vs the Interlink SS7C:
1) It is flush with the wall (the Interlink SS7C sticks out a good inch from the wall)
2) It is quiet turning on and off (the Interlink SS7C is very noisy due to the manual motor it has inside)
3) It is back-lit (the Interlink SS7C is not backlit and has a super small display)
4) It does not require batteries (the Interlink SS7C requires a double-A battery and as you will see in various reviews, it has connection problems and causes the switch to fail often)
5) You can have it auto program based on your latitude and longitude.
I am sure there is a 6th benefit in that it is probably a lot more reliable than the Interlink, but I can't say that currently since I've only had it for a few days.
A 7th benefit (compared to the other Interlink switches) is that this switch can handle any type of light bulb.
Well worth getting this switch and avoiding the Interlink switches.

I still love this switch. It has been very reliable -- no problems so far. I also just love the way it looks and operates. I hate ugly looking devices and this one does not disappoint.
I have it set up in "travel" mode and unlike other switches where it will just randomly turn the lights on and off _once_ during a set time period, this switch will randomly turn the lights on and off multiple times during a set time period. This way it is even harder to tell if someone is home. Just realize that if you use this mode and you are in the room during this time period, the light may turn off while you are in the room. ;-)

(More customer reviews)The best home automation upgrade you can make is to install these on your bathroom fans. The timer never forgets to turn off the fan. The real energy savings is that you do not needlessly blow a bunch of heated or cooled air out of your house.
After 11 years, the buttons on my most heavily used unit started to fall off. This is because each button is held on by four extremely thin and brittle fingers. I'm a bit miffed that I have to replace the entire unit just for this. Hopefully in the past decade Leviton has corrected this weakness in the design.
Here are my recommendations for these units:
* In new construction, install deep junction boxes everywhere so that if you decide to install bulky controls like this timer, they'll fit
* Install only units that can handle "inductive load", like the LTB models. This means they can control motors and fluorescent lighting. Lighting options are changing these days, so don't limit yourself to "incandescent only".
* Install 30 minute LTB30-1LZ or 15 minute LTB15-1LZ timers for half bathrooms. That's plenty of time to evacuate a small room of noxious odors.
* Install 60 minute LTB60-1LZ timers for full baths. The extra time is needed to clear out all the moisture, and you can always choose less time.
* In the garage I use a 2 hour LTB02-1LZ timer for the lights over the cars and laundry
* For the lights over my workbench where I am engaged for longer periods of time, I use a 12 hour LTB12-1LZ timer

(More customer reviews)The timer works as most people have already discussed in their reviews, and is great because no other timer I have found will control compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL's). However, please be VERY careful wiring it.
A distinction that should be clarified is that this TI070 model must have a load OVER 40 watts in order to function. If you are controlling CFL's (as I am) that is more than 3 bulbs since a 60W incandescent equivalent draws just 13 watts. I actually had to add a fourth bulb to bring the total load from 39 watts to 52 watts (slightly wasteful). However, the TI071 model can handle loads less than 40 watts according to the instructions. But, apparently that model requires a neutral wire, which the TI070 model does NOT.
So, to summarize:
TI070 model: Needs a load of at least 40 watts, does NOT need a neutral wire connection
TI071 model: Can handle a smaller load below 40 watts, DOES need a neutral wire connection

UPDATE (8/1/10): I also recently bought a TI071 model (for loads below 40 watts) and it also works great. I am very pleased with these products because they can control CFL bulbs, and with our high electric rates here in CA, that is important.

(More customer reviews)My 4-year old daughter has learned how to turn on lights and the bathroom fan, but not to turn them off. Also, I often find that guests turn on the bathroom fan to help remove any foul odors, but they never come back to turn them off.
This timer is a perfect solution to both problems. It replaces a regular wall switch and gives you four buttons: 15 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes, and off. After the appropriate period, the switch turns off automatically.
The only downside is a very slight clicking noise when you turn the switch on or off, as the relay kicks in. The noise isn't annoying, but you should know about it before you buy.

I bought this to control a ceiling fan in my bathroom and it caused it to buzz/humm. It was very annoying and unacceptable. The fan is a standard type of 3 speed fan with a pull chain, not the electronic speed/remote control type.
I ended up buying an Intermatic brand switch that has the rotary knob and it works perfect.

(More customer reviews)I have been an electrician for 30 years. I installed 8 of these timers in my own house 5 years ago. Given that I installed them correctly they have worked wonderfully. I have never had one lockup on me. However, I have had 5 fail because the buttons broke off. They appear to rely on a set of very small plastic tabs that retain them against the spring tension. I have found that a tab will break off causing the button to hang crooked then eventually another tab will fail and the whole button will fall off. There is no way to repair short of total switch replacement as Leviton doesn't offer replacement buttons. The frequency of use certainly seems to be a factor as most of the failures are in the rooms most used. However, I think that they have a flawed design or material spec. problem. I recommend that you save your receipt for the warranty claim. Maybe they will get the message. I like the product just wish they would hold up better.

This thing barely lights up. You'd almost have to walk into the room several feet, then turn around to see it. I had expected it to be a little brighter.

(More customer reviews)As a commercial and residential electrician for over 14 years, I have been a fan of Lutron Products. I have always like the sleek styling of their dimming switches, with the small sliders . One of the reasons i bought this switch over the Leviton (Leviton LTB30-1LZ) one was it does not need a neutral for it to work. I also like the tap twice to turn on ( and by passing the countdown timer ). I use this in a small bathroom to control the fan ( Panasonic ) as i like to let it run a few minutes after a shower to full vent out the moisture, and the easy tap up or down to adjust the time works well. Installation was simple, 3 wires, the ground wire, the hot and the switch leg. That's it. The switch does not get hot since it's not dimming. The switch is a bit bulky, and it's not a problem if you do not have a lot of wire coming in or out of the switch box, in my case i had a separate feed for my lighting.

I had heard somewhere that you should run your bathroom fan for three times the length of your shower...but i am out the door two minutes after my shower, hence a need for the timer. The light switch gradually brings the light up to full brightness, which seems easier on my eyes first thing in the morning.
