(More customer reviews)If you use Compact Flourescent Lights this type of motion sensor does not work- the CFLs will flicker instead of turning off. CFLs are not compatible with most automatic-on motion sensors as they still require a bit of current flow. You need a motion sensor that includes a neutral wire, which is unfortunate for me as the wiring in my house is old and doesn't have neutral wires.

(More customer reviews)During a visit to my brothers fabulous new condo I fell in love with his auto motion-sensing lights that were scattered around the house. I have a long hallway at home and I definitely could benefit from having one, so i looked it up, researched it, and found out it was these fancy little light switches that were doing all the work. I found this unit here on Amazon and a similar unit at Home Depot for around the same price. After finding my local Home Depot out of stock, I ordered two of these light switches and they came within a few days. Installing them was a cinch, even on my 80-year old apartment's wiring. The end result is everything I imagined it to be. All for a little over 20 bucks a piece? It's totally worth it. I'm ordering two more for the bathroom and the living room.
TO NOTE: Installing is pretty easy. It comes with directions but you pretty much just hook it up the same way your old light switch is hooked up. Be sure to turn off the power to the section of the house/apartment where you'll be installing these. Don't electrocute yourself.

... for use around the house. Besides being commercial duty instead of just residential duty, they are relay based, so CFLs work fine on these.
Unlike other occupancy sensors, these have one very nice feature - adjustable ambient light detection. In the auto-on mode, it'll only turn on the light if there's insufficient ambient light (ie. it's dark out) and won't if there is enough light (ie. daylight through the windows). Likewise, it can be completely disabled for manual-on/auto-off operation only (Title 24). The coverage is excellent and sensitive - you walk into the room, and it knows you're there, unlike some cheaper ones in which you'd almost have to dance right in front of the sensor for it to detect anything. Even at the far end of the hallway here, over 20 feet away, it can detect motion. If you don't want that much range or angle coverage, you can adjust those down too.
Style wise, it's nice that the sensor isn't like some pucker mouth protrusion as with some other models. It is sleekly integrated with the rest of the switch.
Installation wise, NO neutral wire is required. A common ground wire still is, however. It is wider and deeper than a regular switch, though, so you may have issues if your j-box is small.
Minor nit - the time delays are preset. Too minor to ding a star, though - the other features, besides the fact that IT WORKS, more than justify the 5 stars.

(More customer reviews)I wanted to control my outside house lights with a motion detector with the minimum of rewiring and fuss; the SL-6053 does accomplish this goal. You simply replace your existing wall switch with the controller, just like installing a dimmer switch. You then mount the battery-operated wireless motion/daylight sensor to cover the desired area and that's it. You can choose to configure the light to be either off or dim when untriggered and to turn on to full brightness when motion is triggered. You can select the duration the lights stay on at full brightness until returning to the untriggered state. A light sensor ensures the unit stays off during the daytime. You can also use the larger of the two switches to manually turn on or off the lights; when turned on, it stays on; when turned off, the system again responds to motion detection. I had difficulties using the mode when the lights are just dimmed in untriggered mode. They did not seem to trigger properly and did not turn off during the day. I now use the mode where the lights are turned off in the untriggered mode and everything works fine. I have noticed that the motion detector is very sensitive and I had to set it to its lowest sensitivity setting to avoid continuously tripping on. After several months the unit still works well and I still don't know how often I will need to replace the batteries in the motion sensor (not hard to do). Although a little quirky, this device really is a simple and workable drop-in solution to achieve motion/light sensor control for existing home wiring. Also, since the unit includes dimmer settings, you should use incandescent or halogen bulbs, not CFLs. I would welcome a simple on/off version of this unit without dimmer to use with CFLs.

(More customer reviews)I bought this to replace a Leviton PR180. The PR180 seemed to work on my 3 fluorescent lights (2 electronic ballasts, 1 magnetic), but then the bulbs started flickering and eventually went out.
The OSSNL went in with new bulbs and the difference was immediately noticeable. It was as if the lights were connected to a standard switch! Not a hint of buzzing. Definitely worth the extra money for this switch.
I was very impressed by the configuration options in this switch, and spent about an hour testing everything and getting it right. It's great!
02/17/2010 Followup review:
Lowering my rating on this switch because now it is behaving strangely. The switch is installed in my garage and typically the lights are off when I open the garage door, then they turn on as soon as I step on the garage stairs. Recently I had noticed that the lights were on when I arrived home from work, and were on when I would first open the garage door. The switch was not turning off the lights after the 30 second timeout! I tried the manual on/off, and that would shut the lights off but they would not turn back on when I moved in front of the sensor. Even though nothing had changed with the switch configuration, it began functioning strictly as a manual on/manual off switch. As a final fix attempt I ended up flipping the circuit breaker that the switch was attached to, and now it appears to be working again. We'll see how long that lasts. Very strange and frustrating.
03/10/2010 Followup review:
It seems this switch has now completely stopped functioning as a motion-sensing switch. Despite repeating my previous efforts, I was unable to get the lights to turn off in either auto or manual mode. Perhaps I got a lemon. I've uninstalled the switch and will be sending it to Leviton for a replacement under warranty. Hopefully the next switch does not have these problems.
04/25/2010 Followup review:
Leviton sent me a new swtich approximately 2 weeks ago (so expect a 1-month turnaround if you send in a defective switch). So far it is working properly. I will update this review again later after the new switch has been installed for a longer period of time.

Well it's been two months since I installed the new switch, and it's still working properly. Seems I just got a lemon the first time.

Passive Infrared Technology Detects MotionThe OSSNL-IDW works via a passive infrared sensor to automatically switch lights on. In 'off' mode, the lights will stay off regardless of motion detected, until the time-out expires. After the time-out expires, the lights will turn on (auto-on mode only) with the next detected motion. This feature is especially useful when you're making slide or film presentations.
Adjustable LED Night Light Guides You in the DarkIn addition to a motion sensor, the OSSNL-IDW features an LED NightLight. The NightLight operates separately from the lights that are controlled by the sensor, and it will turn on when its photocell detects ambient light that is less than one foot-candle. It will turn off when the ambient light exceeds five foot-candles.
The LED NightLight is adjustable for continuous mode or dimmed mode. In dimmed mode, the LED adjusts to five percent of full brightness after motion has not been detected for two minutes. You can choose the amount of illumination with a simple dial setting.

(More customer reviews)Needed to increase lighting in very dark front yard and sidewalk for visitors, also wanted to increase security. Saw this at Home Depot. Very easy to install in existing lamp post, just a few screws. Good directions. Simple to adjust settings although you have to unscrew and lift off post to make changes but this is easy, too. Had for 1 month so far, working perfectly.
Love 40% dim feature, provides enough light to see yard from window, increases to full brightness for 1,5 or 20 minutes when motion sensed. I set it to brighten x 5 mins when motion sensed, keep it on for 6 hours after dusk so it turns off entirely around 11 pm or midnight or later depending on season, then switches off completely unless motion sensed.
Only issue: wish it had wider degree sensor than 150 degrees, so it would sense motion over a wider area, perhaps 200 or 240 degrees.
Highly recommended.

- Would turn the lights on even when no one entered the room
- Bulbs stopped working one by one. I had set it in the master bath where we have 8 bulbs. We are down to 2 working bulbs now
- Does not turn the lights off even after person leaves the room
I wish I had saved the packaging so I could return this item. I have motion sensor switches in several rooms in the house, including another model from Leviton. I have had no problems with any one of those. I paid extra for this one for its ultra-sonic capabilities which is supposed to sense motion even behind doors. I thought it could sense motion when someone is using the shower which is behind a glass door. That never worked.
Strongly recommend against buying this product

(More customer reviews)I installed one of these in my laundry room (which is located just inside the garage door in my house). Now, whenever we come home, we don't have the fumble for the light switch. I've also installed one in the room that my wife uses for her office for the same reasons.
This switch comes with three adjustments to customize it to your needs.
First, it has an ambient light adjustment so that you can tell it not to turn on if there is already sufficient light in the room. If you turn this setting all the way up, the switch will become a manual on, auto off switch that will only turn on when you push the button, but will turn off after it senses no motion for a set period of time.
Second, it has a sensitivity adjustment, which adjusts how far the sensor will look for motion.
Third, it has a duration adjustment to tell it how long it should wait with no motion before turning the light off.
It also has a red LED, which blinks whenever it detects motion, so you can tell how whether your movements are being detected or not.

(More customer reviews)It works great. I wanted this for a while for our kitchen as it has no natural light coming in. We are always walking in or out with our hands full and I sometimes spill my drink trying to turn off the lights as I leave. Then after having our first child I was finally sold on getting one as my wife is always carrying the baby around.
As mentioned before it is a three way switch but I just used it as a single. Easy to setup the, the part that goes into the wall is slightly deeper than a normal switch but was also not as tall.
It has two great features:
Someone mentions that it doesn't have a choice of times for the lights to turn back on, not sure why they say that but this does have multiple time settings. You have 5s, 1m, 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m. Now I wish there were a few more time interval options like maybe 30 seconds, and a 2 minute one, but that is really not that big of an issue.
This also lets you adjust the photo sensitivity, so if your room has enough natural light during the day and you don't want this to turn on when the room already has enough light you can adjust that as well. I didn't try this as again my kitchen gets no natural light.
Both of these setting are under a small cover that is just above the switch (it has the "on", "off", "auto" positions written on it), you use a small screw driver to open the panel and then turn to the desired settings.
I have this connected to six lights, two are florescent lights. Have been using it for about a month now, hopefully it will last for a while, but considering the price and features it is a really good deal.

(More customer reviews)This is a great little switch; once installed, the sensing is rock solid and I love the adjustable timing and behavior pattern (walk through, learning mode, etc). It also has an on/off switch for when you want to turn it on/off manually. This is definitely the switch you need for electronic ballasts; the zero crossing function/feature is something you want on flourescent lights with electronic ballasts; if you know you will only be using this switch with incadescent or halogen, you can go for the cheaper residential switch.
I took one star off because I don't like the pigtails it comes with; in my opinion, a professional grade switch should have screw terminals to terminate the 12 gauge wire you will probably be connecting this to; instead it has stranded wire that you need to terminate your solid wire to. Not unheard of, but a pet peeve of mine. Make sure it's in tight!
Also, you WILL need a ground; most switches let you forego the ground (although it's highly recommended) and use the neutral, but there is no neutral on this; must have something to do with the zero crossing feature. connections are Hot, ground, and load.

(More customer reviews)I fool this to work with CFLs without the dance floor flashing effect by including one old style incandescent spot light among the CFL spots in the ceiling.
The unit works fine now for over a year in that mode and reduces electric cost by 41%.
The old style bulb evidently fools the circuit and the CFLs go along for the ride. The timer is adjustable with a thin screwdriver for the desired "turn off" delay after someone leave the room
In addition, there is another adjustable screw allowing it to NOT turn on the lights when there is daylight through the room windows. This of course is most useful if the switch faces the window and useless if the room has no windows.

The Leviton brand did not work in this manner and caused the flashing light dance floor effect; the GE works fine.

(More customer reviews)This produce is great under normal circumstances. I have this installed in a pantry closet, the master closet, and in the laundry room. I would not recommend this for the garage unless you dont mind the lights turning on during the day when the garage is opened. Also, there is a setting for how long it stays on. If you put in a room you stay in for more than a few minutes, it will turn off after the set number of minutes. Mine are all set to 1 minute. However, I am in my closet sometimes for more than a minute and I have to walk back in front of the sensor for it to turn back on. That only happens about 1% of the time. The other 99% of the time it's great not having to worry about turning it on and off.
Here's the big flaw..... If your power goes out and comes back on, you will find that all of the lights connected to motion sensors in your house will be on. They will not turn off until you switch to off, then back to auto. If you go out of town for more than a couple days, it's probably wise to turn it from auto to off just in case your power cycles. (Unless you don't mind having your lights left on until you return).

(More customer reviews)I have to say I've installed many dimmers, switches, fan controls, and timers. This one was a little confusing at first due to the extra wire. The way to install it is to find the "white" wireset that should be bundled in your gangbox and attach the white wire to that. Then the black wire and red wire go to the two wires that previously went to your wall switch. The green goes to ground, of course.
Once past that, I fiddled a bit with the time, trying to get the light to stay on only 1 minute as I have this in a laundry room between house and garage. I mostly wanted it so a light will come on when I open the door to go inside. The settings are controlled by small rotary dials. So it's hard to be exact. But it's easy to get it good enough.
There's a knob to have it also check ambient light before turning on. If enough light is present, it won't turn on. It comes pre-set so that lighting is ignored and it always comes on.
I couldn't find one of these locally in almond. I bought this product in ivory, which is lighter than the wall plate, but not as white as the white version. Lowes has wall plates similar in color to this unit.
I have it on a circuit with one CFL bulb and it works fine with it. If you read the reviews, other brands seem to have a problem with CFL's.
