(More customer reviews)Off the bat - Readers need to know that a set like this is *never* going to set your yard awash in tons of free electric light. Manage your expectations and be realistic. A tiny little solar panel cannot power a light big enough to be terribly substantial. That said, I love this set.
LENGTH OF CHARGE
Most days I have used the lights, the panel had decent-but-not-amazing sun. Dusk was just after 5pm, and the lights turned on then via the automatic sensor. I thought the charge would drain much sooner, but the lights lasted until morning, with no loss in intensity. The rechargeable AA batteries are removable - awesome! When they eventually stop holding a full charge, you can drop by Radio Shack and grab a set to replace them. That'll be a while though. The fixtures are plastic, but for $39, who cares.
QUALITY OF LIGHT
This is the best set of solar garden-style lights I have seen. In addition to the great charge, they are brighter. Are the three lights together as bright as a table lamp? No. Are they as bright as my refrigerator bulb? No. Are they bright enough to read by? Yes. Even at about six feet away, I can read comfortably. However, keep in mind, these are not for general illumination. They're more like little spotlights. Designed to shine on a path, fence, or tree. The thing being lit needs to be in the path of the beam. The quality of the light is a little weird - that blueish-white you seen on headlights.
USES
I use the lights in a place where we don't have electric. (Great for a shed, for instance. Or of course, outdoors on paths, fences, plants, trees.) Also, these would be pretty neat for camping! They would be perfect on a porch, driveway, or white fence. (The lighter the color of the thing lit, the more light is reflected.)
ENERGY SAVINGS & EASE OF USE
Let's be clear - You are not going to save a fortune in electricity by using this tiny set of solar lights. Using a 50 watt lamp instead (which is much brighter) would only cost you ten cents to run for twenty hours, even if you pay .10 per kwh on your electric bill. It would take about two years of nighttime use to make your $39 back here. However, if you are using a battery lantern regularly, you'll quickly rack up battery savings. I like them because they can stand alone, without wiring or a bunch of expensive D cells. Point the panel toward the sun and plug in the lights.
CONCLUSION
Great reflector, better longer-lasting charge than any I have ever seen on a solar set. Love the fact that the rechargeable batteries can be replaced. Decent output. Light is a little blueish-white and weird. But I think they are pretty terrific for $39.

(More customer reviews)First of all, this wind generator's output is preset to 14.1 volts (for charging batteries, you know. The preset can be adjusted from 13 to 17 volts, by the way). 14.1 volts divided into 400 watts is 28 amps, so the specs are correct as stated in the product description. Remember to always keep in mind the differences between 120 volt AC current and 12 to 14 volt DC current -- it's really important on this alternative energy stuff.
Naturally, you are only going to get close to the 400-watt maximum output with a steady 28 mph wind. But the unit won't "go up in smoke" at that point as some reviewer said -- all wind turbines have built in cut-out system that prevent them from going over their rated output and being damanged. C'mon, folks... the people who make these things are not dummies.
But it's true that there are not many places in the world where you get 28 mph winds blowing on a regular, continuous basis. The suggestion of other reviewers to figure on getting maybe a 15 mph average wind speed with output from the wind generator of 50 to 60 watts at 2 to 3 amps is a realistic evaluation of what most people can expect out this or any other small wind turbine on a fairly regular basis. On days when you've got more wind, you luck out and get more power is all.
That's why, for most people, the first alternative power choice is amorphous solar panels (they continue to work on cloudy days and with partial shade) because you can rely on the sun on a day to day basis more than you can on having a good steady wind consistently. The manual for this product states that the blades should start turning in a 7 mph wind, which is just a good breeze. The product manual is *outstanding* by the way, the most complete I've ever seen for any product and indicates the integrity and honesty of the company who makes these units. Anyone considering this purchase or looking into wind power in general should thoroughly check out the manual. Wind power can be wonderful in the right location and in many other places it can be *combined* with solar so that you get power from the sun when it's shinning and power from the wind when it's dark (the wind often blows well at night) or when it is really cloudy/stormy (that also usually means good wind).
In this era of everything-is-made-in-China it's great to see a solid product that is price-competitive like this one which is actually made in the USA by Southwest Windpower Inc. of Flagstaff, Arizona. When I get around to adding some wind capability to my existing solar panel setup, this product would be a good choice because a 60-watt solar panel will run you around the same price. So you can add 60 watts of wind for about the same cost as adding 60 watts of solar -- and with a hybrid system you get to take advantage of both alternative technologies. Think outside the oil barrel!

This switch will not sense when somebody comes in to the room and turn the lights on. Instead, you have to press the button to turn the lights on and as long as it detects motion the lights stay on. If no motion for programmed period of time, then they turn off. Very easy to install, works as advertised. I would recommend it if you don't need the lights to turn on automatically.

(More customer reviews)I have three retractable clotheslines installed on the T poles I erected in the backyard. The clotheslines are similar in design but represent three different brands, Butts (in the rear), Sunline, and the Crawford-Lehigh RC40 40-Foot Retractable Clothesline. All are retractable 40-foot lines, but the Lehigh design differs from most other retractable lines I've seen or used, and I've gone through many of these things. The mounting bracket for the Lehigh is metal and swivels smoothly, a feature handy during installation and tightening of the line. I think that the Lehigh has a sturdier design because the body of the durable plastic case extends to give firm support for the mounting bracket. On other clotheslines only two thin pieces of plastic support the mounting bracket. Also note when choosing a retractable clothesline that the Lehigh uses a two pronged hook on which to fasten and anchor the line. Other models use a larger circular attachment on which to wrap and anchor the clothesline. I prefer the hook design.
To get a nice, taut clothesline, pull the clothesline tight with one hand while holding onto a short segment of line pulled out from the line reel. Wrap the taut rope one or two turns around the anchor hook. Then pull slightly on the other end of the line. Let go and it will retract tightly into its protective case.
Finally:
Of the three clothesline mounted on our clothesline pole, we like the Lehigh best of all. It maintains its tautness during and after use, is easy to install, and is fairly simple to tighten.
In less than a month the metal rivets at the pivoting points of the hinge are beginning to rust. Buyers may want to coat those points with spray oil, clear nail polish or a sealer.

Three issues you should know before buying: Unlike other dimmers by this company, I cannot dim the lights way way down to nearly off, which I like for night light use. Second: the switch, the part you actually touch to turn the light on and off, is narrower than you are used to, because the small slider is next to the switch and both must fit through the rectangle in the strike plate. So it doesn't feel as nice as other switches. Third, the wall plate is not included, so the picture is misleading, although this is revealed in product description. But I didn't realize, and now I have a white switch with the old beige strike plate, and wall plates do not ship directly from amazon. So not quite the bargain I expected.

(More customer reviews)I fool this to work with CFLs without the dance floor flashing effect by including one old style incandescent spot light among the CFL spots in the ceiling.
The unit works fine now for over a year in that mode and reduces electric cost by 41%.
The old style bulb evidently fools the circuit and the CFLs go along for the ride. The timer is adjustable with a thin screwdriver for the desired "turn off" delay after someone leave the room
In addition, there is another adjustable screw allowing it to NOT turn on the lights when there is daylight through the room windows. This of course is most useful if the switch faces the window and useless if the room has no windows.

(More customer reviews)I have installed a couple of these switches, and they are not just plug-in and forget. The mini-manual the comes with them gives details, but in chinese-english that is hard to understand.
(1) Setup - There are two small thumb-wheel controls beside the motion-sensor. The one is for setting the length of time the switch is ON, and is obvious. The other one is quite delicate and compensates for ambient lighting and the lighting of the moving object. This is especially tricky when the motion sensor has a window in its view, and the ambient light it sees changes from day to night. If you have a window facing the switch, it would be best to put a blind in it to filter out some of the ambient light changes. With patience, I was able to get the switch to work well even though it faced a window. But it takes trial-and-error to compensate for motion during both day and dusk (it doesn't work at night).
(2) Flickering fluorescents - With the widespread conversion to fluorescent lighting, there is a new problem. The small screw-in spiral bulbs that replace incandescent lights have electronic "ballasts", which are totally different from those on the long fluorescent tubes. This motion-sensing light switch does not go completely OFF when there is no motion. A sensitive VOM will measure about 30+ volts on the hot line. However, there is little current available. The 30+ volts is enough to trigger the ballast on the spiral fluorescents, and it tries to light the lamp, however there is not enough current available and the light tries to go on, drains the minimal charge on the line, and then goes out. This repeats and you get a flicker. ---- You can solve this by replacing one of your lights with an incandescent lamp. This will constantly drain the charge trickle through the switch and prevent the voltage building up to trigger the ballast. I have used 45W and 60W bulbs, and both work. They just go in parallel with your spiral fluorescents. And you should no longer have any flicker.
**** With careful installation, these switches work quite well. My wife expecially appreciates the one in our laundry room which goes on automatically when she comes in with piles of laundry (we have a traditional marriage).

(More customer reviews)It's the best foldable or umbrella dryer. It also rotates around the pole. I like this rectangular shape better than the V-shape one. I can hang more clothes, sheets, and/or blankets, all at the same time. It has enough space for 2 big loads of clothes. Everyone should have one of this in the yard. It's great for the environment. Beside saving energy, I've also saved more than $50-$60/mo not using my electric dryer. That's $600 a year. We are working on our deck and landscaping our yard. So, we don't have a designated location for the clothesline dryer yet. My husband just hammered it to the ground (instead of cementing it down as they recommended). It holds up just fine in the windy days. .
If you want your towels to be soft, don't over-dry them in the sun. Set the timer and take them in when they're slightly damp and put them in the electric/gas dryer with a sheet of Bounce for a couple of minutes.But if you left them stiffly dried, put a wet towel in the load in a dryer. It will help soften them up.
I have back problem so it does take me a little bit more time to carry the several trips of clothes out to the yard, hang, and pin down every piece. But I feel happy "harvesting" the sun energy and getting some exercise every day, (except for the rainy days. of course) GO SOLAR!!!!

I have used 5 line clotheslines like this one for a dozen years at two different houses. The current line is over 7 years old and is just now in need of major repairs. It has lived its life battling the hot sun on a west facing wall. The only place we have to hang our laundry is across our patio--not a very attractive choice for parties. When not in use, it hangs unobtrusively on the wall. On wash day, I pull it out across the patio (which is shorter than the line's full length.) I can hang several loads of jeans, assorted clothes, and my really thick bedspread and it supports the weight. I highly recommend this clothesline.

(More customer reviews)I have always found clotheslines a tricky thing to mount, because of the tension required in order to keep a line that does not sag. I tried first some nylon cord. These plastic cords have too much elasticity and sag over time. Also I found that I had to put too much pressure on my clothesline poles just to get this the plastic cord relatively tight.
But this is a wire product, single wire coated with a durable plastic. Wire means no stretching, so I was simple able to pull it taught without killing myself. Also, the wire can be simply threaded through your clothesline pole and coiled back onto itself. No tools, and it doesn't slip over time (about 1 year so far). Great product.

Household Essentials H-150 30-Line Outdoor Parallel-Style Clothes Dryer with Steel Arms Review

(More customer reviews)I've wanted an outdoor clothes dryer for years and after doing some research decided upon this model. I had grown up with parallel clotheslines but my current yard is sloped and mostly shady, so I wanted an umbrella type that I could place in the sunniest area.
The dryer arrived with machine lubricant on it, which I was pretty much expecting (based on other reviews of the larger model of this item) but it was fairly easily cleaned off.
I knew there were going to be problems, though when I set it up. The line itself is cheap plastic that sags and stretches, and it's a bit of a pain (to say the least) to tighten it, and it's very difficult to get it taut. Also, the top itself did not seem square even though I set it up exactly as the directions stated. I was careful to balance the clothes on either side and started in the center. After hanging three loads of not very heavy laundry (T-shirts and lightweight items) I heard a kind of sickening "pop" and an entire side was sagging. One of the hinges on the arms had bent. Since the clothes were only half dry, I let it go until later when I was able to pack it up for return.
After reading some other reviews on a different site, it seems this is a fairly common problem...the hinge and arms are made of aluminum, not steel like the center post, and evidently can't take the stress. So disappointing. I had read glowing reviews of this product with people stating they place four large loads of laundry on it each week. There was still plenty of room on the rack on which I could have done this, but three light loads was clearly the maximum that could be held. Perhaps these other folks were hanging baby clothes and lingerie?
I got a refund on this item and I think I am going to next try the umbrella type with the slanted arms. Another issue I had with this dryer was that the lines seemed awfully close together. After almost 8 hours in mostly sun, on a 100 degree day, the clothes in the middle lines were still fairly damp. (This was not due to the rack breaking, as the clothes were sagging but not touching). I was not drying anything particularly thick and heavy (jeans or furniture covers, for example) so I think it was mainly due to a problem with air circulation.
All in all a very disappointing experience. I would love to be able to find the kind of solid, old-school, permanent umbrella type that I remember from my youth, but sadly those seem to be gone. I'm guessing with the current recession that more and more people are going to be drying clothes outside, so perhaps there will be more choices available in time.

(More customer reviews)I wanted a light weight dryer that I could easily remove once the clothes were dried because the best place to put it was right in the middle of my deck. I set it up so that it goes through the umbrella hole of my patio table into the umbrella weight below. It works great and you can use the table to fold the laundry on. No digging, no concrete. Simple, simple, simple.
It is so easy to set up and remove. For me, the light weight construction is a plus. Being able to remove and store it also keeps the lines clean. If it were permanently installed, you would probably have to clean the lines every time you used it.
I love using this product. I save $$$ on my energy bill, the laundry smells great- especially the sheets, and it is very satisfying to complete a chore the way my grandmother used to do it.

Sunforce 81096 Solar Shed Light Review

(More customer reviews)When the factory-charged batteries ran out the solar panel would not charge the light. This was a fluorescent version. The replacement unit- quickly sent by Amazon -was LED. The same case and everything but with bright LEDs inside. I liked it much better than the fluorescent one.
The second unit charged and worked very well until the charge was depleted. Then the LEDs would start blinking. Like an emergency light. Sunforce said that this was not normal behavior. I returned it as well. The light will stay up for around two hours, charge quickly but the blinking made it unfit for continuous use. A nice product but quallity needs to be improved.
