(More customer reviews)This light is a fantastic buy if you really want one flashlight to be your last light you ever get. This is the most powerful flashlight you can reasonably get unless you either get a HID (high intensity discharge) which is way overkill and has other limitations... or if you read for hours on specialized forums and figure out how to buy $150+ lights.
First, we will discuss what its beam looks like:
This light has a very smooth beam. With a normal cheapo light if you shine it at a wall, you will see lots of rings and artifacts due to the plastic reflector.
The A6 does not have this effect at all. Holding it about a foot away from a wall, you will see that it has a hotspot of around 3 inch diameter. Then it has a corona which is about 18 inches in diameter which is called the spill.
The spill is what allows you to easily see your surroundings late at night. If you are walking, a super bright area of 3 feet across doesn't do much for you... its the corona that lights up the entire area so you can see what you are doing. I'd say about half the power of the light goes into the corona. A focused maglight for example has almost all its power in its focused hotspot by way of comparison.
The hotspot gives the light its 'throw'. This means that you can shine the light at something 50 feet away and still see it. The spill beam is effectively gone at that range, but your tight hotspot has expanded into a nice spotlight effect.
The A6 is considered to be more of a 'flooder' than a thrower, which means its hotspot and corona are fairly wide. The light itself is a warm white color. Against a white wall, it will appear white with a bit of yellow tint... around 4100K if this helps. This is unlike an incandescent which is around 3000k and has a definite yellowish or 'warm' feel to it, and a 6500k flourescent which has a 'cold, clinical' feel to it.
Size:
This light is not as big as I thought it would be. It is about as fat as a C-battery light, but it is only slightly longer than your hand.
Modes:
The light is turned on and off by clicking the button. Holding the button down makes it advance thru its 4 modes. First is a low powered mode about equal to a 9-LED 5 buck special light. Medium is significantly brighter and high is very powerful. Finally, it has a strobe which is great for showing off and a Rave, but not very useful to be honest.
Batteries:
The main advantage of this light is that it uses normal batteries. That said, DO NOT USE ALKALINEs with this light. You can, but on high mode it will burn your batteries down fast! This is because the light draws around 2.8 Amps of current, which is really hard on 6xAA alkalines. Rechargables work a lot better for higher drain applications such as this light.
Your best bet is to get Sanyo Eneloops. Amazon has a great package with 8AA, 2AAA, and a charger (and some other junk). These AAs have much better capacity than the old NiCads, and they dont lose their charge near as fast as standard NiMH rechargables, which means your light won't die on you after a few months of non-use. If you have the old ones, use em. But if you have no rechargables, strongly consider using these. They have good shelf life too.
You can always use the same charger and battery type for many of your other electronics around the house. It is worth the investment.
