I just had a new shingled roof put on last summer, so I wanted to make sure that I got a rake that would not damage it when removing snow. I live in the mountains of Maine, so snow is a pretty common event during the winter. After reading the reveiws of this rake, I decided that this would be the best rake for the job. The first thing I did before I assembled it was, replace the nuts, bolts, and washers with stainless steel. This costs less than $4. Some of the other reveiws complained of the originals. Cheap Fix! After using it a half dozen times, I can say that I made the right choice for a rake. Very well built, lightweight, and rugged! I would like to point out that, The proper way to roof rake is NOT to wait until you get three feet of snow accumulation, from several storms, with ice dams already present. If you use this rake the way it is intended, It should last a lifetime.

SOG Specialty Knives & Tools FS01-N Spirit Knife, Black Oxide Review

SOG Specialty Knives and Tools FS01-N Spirit Knife, Black Oxide

I first came across the SOG FS01N Spirit Knife at my favorite knife store. With an occupation that keeps me outdoors, I'm always looking for gear that can go the distance. In the few short months that I've owned this blade, its been one of the sweeter finds.
With a good solid feel and great balance, the SOG Spirit Knife sports a screw on nylon handle and a 4.25" black oxide coated, stainless steel blade. The overall length of this knife is a little over 10" and weighs in at 10 ounces. It held its own in making clean cuts on rigging.
The blade still carried itself in weight and balance when separated from the handle for mounting. With a 19 millimeter opening, mounting to a staff or hiking pole can be tricky. Even though it was too small to mount to my hiking pole, the handle of my push broom matched up perfectly. Just remember the set screw.
In the box, the SOG Spirit Knife is packaged with a black nylon sheath and the manufacturer's lifetime warranty. Lynwood, Washington based SOG Specialty Knives sports an above average website with useful information. The company also lists a toll free customer support number.
Overall, I'm quite impressed with the SOG Spirit Knife. Its proved itself to be a durable and reliable piece of gear. The overall quality speaks for itself.

Fiskars 9394 12-Foot Extendable Pruning Saw Review

Fiskars 9394 12-Foot Extendable Pruning Saw

I replaced my Home Depot pole saw/pruner with this Fiskars model. What a difference some thoughtful engineering makes.
(1) Pole Does Not Bend: The pole does not bend even when extended to full length. Nothing is more frustrating than having the pole bend and bounce out of the cut when it is fully extended.
(2) Locking Mechanism: On the HD pole saw the extension is "locked" with a compression collar. This design does not work well when it gets wet and loses its gripping power over time. The most powerful cut is the down stroke and on my HD brand saw when the collar slipped the pole simply came apart. On the Fiskars the lever-clamp clicks into the locked position and the clamping power can be adjusted with a screwdriver. The pole never came apart during use.
Save your time and a return trip to HD with this extremely well made pole saw!
