This is a good homeowner-quality hedge trimmer. It's not designed to be a commercial tool, nor is it priced in that category....there are other choices if you need to spend three hours a day trimming hedges. All-in-all, though, I like it.
Pros:
- 24" blade provides extra reach over most other trimmers. Even the corded and gas powered units are mostly in the 18-22" range.
- The 24 volt battery should provide (at least theoretically) more power than the 18 volt versions. Being battery powered, you have, of course, unlimited portability.
- Well balanced and easy to hold. This is obviously important if you're going to use it for any length of time.
- A 3/4" branch will fit between the teeth. Anything larger and you need a good pair of loppers.
- Being bright orange, it's almost impossible to accidentally leave it outside.
Cons:
- Only one battery is included with the trimmer. Fully charged, it lasted for roughly 20 minutes of cutting time.
- The standard charger takes NINE HOURS to charge the battery.
- The battery is Nickel Cadmium, not Nickel Metal Hydride, or a lighter weight, higher energy-density Li-ion battery. NiCd batteries have a fairly rapid self-discharge cycle...just sitting on a shelf, a fully charged cell will lose a significant amount of charge in a couple of months. They also suffer from a significant memory effect. If you repeatedly only partially discharge the battery, it'll eventually lose the ability to retain a full charge.
- A spare battery and a high-speed two-hour charger are available, but basically double the initial cost.
- The blade cover works, but it's thin floppy vinyl. I doubt it cost over 5 cents to make.
It was really a toss-up to give this three or four stars. The battery is clearly its weak point. My standards for tools are pretty high. As I said at the beginning, this isn't designed for heavy-duty use; rather it's targeted at homeowners. And from that perspective, it's pretty good. It's certainly fine for my needs.

Remington RM3017HP 17-Inch 3 Amp Axcess Extended Reach Electric Hedge Trimmer Review

I am on my third Remington Hedge Wizard. All of them have either fell apart after one use or the internal cam mechanism skips when anything bigger than a pencil is cut. The idea is a good one but the design is horrendous. Whoever designed this thing should be fired today! I called the manufacturer and they were very sympathetic and promised me a "good one". The guy on the phone was extremely nice and helpfull even though I was upset. Good service from that standpoint but I do not think that good service can fix the design screw ups. The plastic housing is weak, the pivot stop is weak, the handle is not ergonomically friendly. It is also clunky. One of my units got hot and started smoking after a few minutes. I opened up the blade cover and saw that the plastic had melted.

Black & Decker NPT318 18-Volt Cordless Electric Pole Hedge Trimmer Review

Black and Decker NPT318 18-Volt Cordless Electric Pole Hedge Trimmer

That may seem like an odd title for a review on a Hedge trimmer but if you've read the review by "Frank" you'll understand. The NPT318 is an amazing machine.
I have the worst kind of hedges -tall 6-9feet, difficult to reach because of cramped space/sloping ground and encroaching citrus trees. The hedges are mainly bougainvillea which has awful thorns. The citrus have thorns too.It is hot and the hedges are overgrown because of record winter rains. In addition , I am not particularly strong. So, this is a good test situation.
Yes this machine is difficult to operate at full reach horizontaly, but the alternatives are worse. I have used a 2-cycle hedge trimmer - a viscious ,noisy ,stinky beast. It is heavier! I bought my Dad a 240volt (yes off the mains for use in U.K.) German pole hedge trimmer. It is more powerful but just as unwieldy .In addition you have the power cord to deal with.
I found the run time ideal - it still had plenty of charge after 45 minutes attacking the bougainvillea.By then I needed a rest anyway. I charged it during lunch and then attacked some more hedge. Some of this required me to use it at full stretch - I am 6ft with long arms +the pole -yes these are monster hedges. The machine worked perfectly. The alternative is wobbling on a step ladder ,juggling a power cord and trying to avoid the thorns. So far I've done all my hedges and the neighbor's without a scratch. It is far too hot to wear a shirt and using my old B&D with a power cord+ step ladder I would look like someone from a crucifiction scene in the movies by now. The combination of citrus and bougainvillea is bloody!
My suggestins to B&D to improve the NPT 318 are:
1.Increase the voltage from 18v to 24v. This will increase the run-time/decrease motor weight/increase power.
2.Make the battery and charger interchangeable with other B&D equipment.
3. Use lighter-weight metals(magnesium alloy?) for the blade and pole. The weight of the battery isn't a problem because of it's location on the handle.
4. Consider offering an extending pole like Remington use on their pole chain saws.
5. Design the NPT 318 so you can use it without the pole - like a conventional cordless hedge trimmer.
6. When Black & Decker have a prototype they can test it on my bougainvillea !:-)
